About Differential

The XF Jaguar differential is essentially a device used to split the engine torque in two and is found on modern vehicles as well as four-wheel drive vehicles. When the differential is used, it allows the outer drive wheel to rotate faster than the inner drive wheel when turning. An increase in the speed of one wheel is balanced with the decrease of speed from the other wheel.

In most vehicles there is a differential in the front of the vehicle and one in the rear. In a four-wheel drive vehicle, a differential is needed between each set of drive wheels, as well as one in the front and one in the rear. The XF Jaguar differential joins the pinion to the prop shaft. The pinion is then connected to the main shaft of the gearbox.

Damage to a XF Jaguar differential is rare and there’s not usually any warning signs of a failure before it occurs. However, if you hear a loud clunk when changing from drive to reverse and back, this could signal an imminent failure of the differential. Another symptom of damage is a grinding noise coming from the driveshaft and lack of power.

Jaguar trivia

  • The 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most gruelling and famous race events in the world, has been won by Jaguar an astonishing seven times. Their first victory was back in 1951.
  • Talk about testing your car! Jaguars are put through a very rigorous climate test, where they are first tested in -40 degrees for twelve hours. Once that's done, the cars are then sprayed with water while standing in a 0-degree wind tunnel. That's why they cope so well with British weather.
  • The Jaguar XJ has that luxurious leather interior, but did you know that all of that leather comes very specifically from Scottish Angus Bulls? Bulls don't get stretch marks, and they don't get bitten much by mosquitoes either. Belly and neck skin becomes the dash and door finish, while the backbone and the rump are used for the seats.
  • The first-ever XK120 rolled off the production line and was delivered immediately to Clark Gable, who had preordered it well in advance. The XK120 came with a removable windscreen and could hit a solid 120mph..
  • The most expensive car in Jaguar's history is the XJ220. It cost a rather intimidating £413,000 in 1991 and is also one of the fastest cars they've ever built, capable of getting up to 217mph.
