About Clutch Pedal

The Astra Vauxhall clutch pedal is a small pedal only found in manual vehicles, and which is located on the left in the driverside foot well. When it is depressed it begins a sequence of events in the vehicle, starting with the master cylinder. This cylinder converts the pressure exerted from the driver into hydraulic pressure. This is then sent to the slave cylinder which pushes on the release bearing via a pushrod. The release bearing is mounted on the transmission shaft and pushes against the pressure plate assembly and clutch disc. The clutch disc creates friction with the flywheel and as a result the driver is able to change the gears of the vehicle.

Astra Vauxhall clutch pedals are sometimes covered with a rubber pad for additional grip which should be replaced if they are worn. Clutch pedals themselves do not generally fail but are attached to the master cylinder rod using a retainer and plastic bushing. These parts could need replacing through general wear and damage to these parts would be indicated by movement in the clutch pedal and a feeling of a ‘loose’ clutch. These should be replaced as soon as movement is noticed to prevent further clutch damage.

Vauxhall Astra trivia

  • In South Africa, drivers could buy the MK3 Astra, which came with a turbo-charged C20LET engine. The car was sold as the 200ts, and only one has ever been seen in the UK. Luckily, the C20LET supercharged engine was also used in the Calibra and Cavalier Turbo, so Brits could still experience the thrill.
  • A survey by a car insurance company in 2016 revealed that the Astra is the top car for making yourself more attractive to women. 24% of those that took part in the survey said that driving an Astra would be an attractive attribute for a man, while only 19% said the same about the BMW 1 Series…
  • The Astra GTE Quicksilver was a design exercise intended to coincide with the silver anniversary of the Ellesmere Port Factory in 1987.
  • The white version of the Vauxhall Astra 1800 GTE was the first car in the UK to be colour-coded. The body trim matched the white base colour and included the skirts and the wheel arch extensions. Ford was so happy with the look that the silver, black, and red models also started to include colour-coding.
  • In 30 years of production, there had been 2.5 million Astras sold in the UK, which means that it ranks fourth in the most popular cars in Britain.
