About Crankshaft Pulleys

The crankshaft, with the help of the crankshaft pulley, has an important role to play in the distribution of power in a vehicle and is fundamentally responsible for driving the car’s wheels. The engine is the power machine of a car, literally converting energy, in the form of fuel, into movement, and is known as an internal combustion engine. The engine is made up of several components that all work together to enable combustion to occur and in turn the car to move. The Alfa Romeo crankshaft pulley has an important part to play in the mechanical linkage which works to harness and distribute the power produced in the engine and transform it into the rotary drive required to make the vehicle move. The Alfa Romeo crankshaft pulley enables the drive belt to smoothly spin around, driven by the crankshaft, allowing the drive belt to propel or drive various components in the engine compartment, such as the water pump and air conditioning compressor.

The crankshaft pulley's job is to turn the belt/s that connect to and operate various components in the engine. Situated at the foot of the engine directly in front of the crankshaft, secured to the engine by bolts, the crankshaft pulley is essentially a wheel which has outer grooves that engage with the crankshaft, while linking to other components via a system of belts. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons by the connecting rods. The movement of the pistons makes the crankshaft turn. The connecting rods provide drive from the pistons to the crankshaft, where this power is changed into rotational force and distributed via the pulley and drive belt system to the various components that work together to make the wheels of the car move.

The crankshaft uses the crankshaft pulley system to distribute the power it receives from the pistons, to the components driven by the drive belt. This pulley system enables the distribution of power from the crankshaft to components such as the alternator and power steering pump, while ensuring these components are functioning in sync and kept in alignment with the rotation of the crankshaft. The crankshaft pulley helps to prolong the life of the crankshaft by absorbing some of the vibration, noise and friction produced in the process of internal combustion.

A worn, rusted, dented or damaged crankshaft pulley can affect the vital timing system of the engine and lead to damage to other crucial components. Signs of a problem can be a rattling or knocking noise from the engine and excessive vibration. When this part fails, replacing it with a Alfa Romeo crankshaft pulley will guarantee a part that's completely compatible with the make and model of your vehicle.

Alfa Romeo trivia

  • One of the most famous onscreen appearances of an Alfa Romeo was in the James Bond film Octopussy when the superspy stole a graphite GTV6. The car brand shows up again in Quantum of Solace, racing against Bond’s Aston Martin.
  • Alfa is an acronym, standing for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, but few people are aware of where the word Romeo came from. It’s actually the surname of the Italian engineer Nicola Romeo, who bought the company as WWI was raging.
  • There was a long period where Alfa Romeo simply stopped selling cars to the USA. Exports stopped in 1995 and didn’t resume again until 2015 when they launched the 4C sports car.
  • All car companies have a slogan, but Alfa Romeo never seemed happy with theirs. They have had several, with everything from ‘The family car that wins races’ to ‘Mediocrity is a sin’. In 2020, they’re sticking with ‘Beauty is not enough. Power for your control.’
  • It is rumoured that the Alfa Romeo was one of Henry Ford’s favourite car designs. The story goes that he would always take off his hat as a sign of respect when he saw one on the roads.
