About Link Arms
A Alfa Romeo link arm connects the suspension of the vehicle to its frame using bushings and is attached to the wheels through ball joints. There are typically two rear link arms on a vehicle, and a further two on the front of the vehicle.
The Alfa Romeo link arm plays a key part in the vehicle’s suspension system as it is responsible for allowing tyres to move up and down freely and in line with the vehicle’s body. If a control arm needs replacing, the ride would be noticeably less smooth.
When a Alfa Romeo link arm wears down and needs to be replaced you may notice that your tyres are not wearing evenly, or wear quickly. It is also possible that a Alfa Romeo link arm may break if you drive over a large pothole or bump. In either of these events, the control arm should be replaced. It is also common for bushes and ball joints to be replaced at the same time if wear and tear is the cause.
After replacing a link arm, it is important that your wheels are also aligned to avoid uneven tyre wear.
Alfa Romeo trivia
- One of the most famous onscreen appearances of an Alfa Romeo was in the James Bond film Octopussy when the superspy stole a graphite GTV6. The car brand shows up again in Quantum of Solace, racing against Bond’s Aston Martin.
- There was a long period where Alfa Romeo simply stopped selling cars to the USA. Exports stopped in 1995 and didn’t resume again until 2015 when they launched the 4C sports car.
- All car companies have a slogan, but Alfa Romeo never seemed happy with theirs. They have had several, with everything from ‘The family car that wins races’ to ‘Mediocrity is a sin’. In 2020, they’re sticking with ‘Beauty is not enough. Power for your control.’
- In 1933, the Italian government ‘acquired’ Alfa Romeo, and they kept their hold on it until 1986. That’s when Fiat bought the company and the government had no choice but to let it go.
- It is rumoured that the Alfa Romeo was one of Henry Ford’s favourite car designs. The story goes that he would always take off his hat as a sign of respect when he saw one on the roads.
