About Steering Knuckles

A motor vehicle’s Audisteering knuckle is a component which contains the wheel hub or spindle and attaches to the suspension mechanism through a ball joint. It plays an integral role as the pivotal point of the suspension and steering system. On cars with a conventional suspension system, the spindle of the Audisteering knuckle locates and provides support to the inner and outer wheel bearings. There are various types of Audisteering knuckle, which come in a range of different shapes and sizes. However, the two main designs can be divided into those that are accompanied by a hub and those that come with a spindle.

The Audisteering knuckle plays an important part in the steering and suspension system of a modern motor vehicle. If it becomes worn or is damaged there is likely to be immediate, discernible evidence. This normally takes the form of damage to the front tyres, which is exhibited by uneven wear.

Defective steering geometry caused by a damaged Audisteering knuckle assembly adversely impacts on the steering and suspension of the car and may have safety implications. The system should be inspected immediately and the damaged part replaced. Failure to do so may result in additional damage to the vehicle’s suspension and steering systems.

Audi trivia

  • The classic Audi ‘four-ring’ logo is instantly recognisable and is meant to symbolise the four companies that make up the main trading arms of Audi.
  • Audi was founded after the German engineer August Horch fell out with the co-founder of his first manufacturing company. He called the new company August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH, which doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue.
  • You might think that crash tests in cars have always been a requirement, but it was Audi that first started doing them. Far from the modern methods used today, Audi engineers simply let their cars roll down hills until they hit something. Spectators used to line up to watch the excitement.
  • The Audi Type K was the first car with left-hand steering as standard. This was one of Audi’s most popular cars, especially in Germany.
  • Audi has been responsible for many firsts in car design. One of the most impactful was the introduction of the dual-clutch gearbox, first seen in the Quattro S1 E2. Now, of course, they are commonplace.
