About Power Steering Boxs

Power steering, also known as power assisted steering, makes steering a motor vehicle easier for the driver by reducing the amount of force that is required to be applied to the steering wheel when trying to manoeuvre the car and almost every vehicle that is built nowadays has some form of power steering system.

Although electric power assisted steering is rising in popularity, by far the most prevalent system at present is hydraulic power.

Hydraulic steering employs a pump, which is normally driven by a belt.  The pump generates pressure and the driver’s control is provided by either a rack and pinion or a BMWpower steering box. Whichever of the two systems is used, the basic operation is the same. The fluid pressure generated by the pump is used to push against a piston.  When the steering wheel is turned, pressure flows to one side, causing the piston, which is attached to the steering gears, to move.  The driver is thereby able to allow hydraulic pressure to do most of the work involved in turning the steering wheel.

Although the rack and pinion system is felt to provide lighter weight and greater control precision, the BMW power steering box is considered to be harder wearing and possess greater durability.

BMW trivia

  • The famous German pilot, the Red Baron, called BMW engines the 'greatest in the world' and ‘the best engine in the war’.
  • The BMW M1 has a classic look, so it's no surprise that its designer also came up with some other amazing car designs. Giorgetto Giugiaro is also responsible for the DeLorean, the Beretta U22 Neos handgun, and the Nikon D4 camera! Although, he also designed the Yugo, commonly called the worst car that's ever been made.
  • Electric cars might be all the rage now, but BMW built their first one in 1972 and called it the BMW 1602e. It didn't quite make it to market though, thanks to the fact that it could only hold a twenty-minute charge.
  • That distinctive BMW car engine sound that new owners fall in love with might not be real. The BMW M5 has such a quiet engine that they had to install fake engine noises to keep drivers happy!
  • Think you know what BMW is an acronym of? If you answered Broke My Wallet, you’re definitely wrong. It really stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke (which is Bavarian Motor Works in English).
