About Top Ball Joints

The Chevrolet top ball joint acts as a pivot between the wheels and the suspension and connects the upper control arm and the knuckle together with an upper control arm seal boot in the middle. Although there are front ball joints in vehicles, some high-performance vehicles also have rear ball joints.

The Chevrolet top ball joint consists of a ball stud and bearing which sits inside a housing socket. Underneath the bottom side of the bearing is a rubber pressure ring. Lastly there is a grease fitting which acts as a guide for wear.

To inspect for damage of the Chevrolet top ball joint you need to ensure that the vehicle is supported by the wheels. Ensure that the grease fitting is free of dirt and debris and then move a screwdriver or your fingernail across the cover. If the grease fitting is either flush or recessed into the cover the Chevrolet top ball joint needs replacing.

Signs of failure include clicking, popping or snapping sounds when the wheel is turned. Failures of a ball joint are very serious and can cause the wheel’s angle to be incorrect.

Chevrolet trivia

  • The first Chevrolet was the iconic series C Classic Six. It sold for the very low price of just $2,150. That's about £1700 in proper money.
  • The Camaro is one of the most recognised cars in the world, but it wasn't always called the Camaro. It was originally called The Panther, but Chevrolet wanted to go for a more family-friendly vibe.
  • If anyone ever tells you that they own a 2006 Silverado Intimidator SS, there's a good chance that they're telling porky pies. This is considered to be the rarest of all Chevy trucks and was built to honour the memory of Dale Earnhardt. He died during the 2001 Daytona 500, and only 1,333 were ever sold to the general public.
  • When it comes to stock car racing, it's hard to beat Chevrolet. As of 2015, they became the most successful manufacturer in the history of NASCAR, with 749 race wins and a staggering 38 manufacturer's championships.
  • There's a version of the Corvette that is very different from its counterparts. The Corvette Grand Sport is much lighter than traditional designs, but the car was built at a time when General Motors were stopping projects. Only five of the cars were made, and the hefty price tag of £6-8 million means that they are all in the hands of private collectors.
