About Catalytic Converters
The Fiat catalytic converter is part of your car's exhaust system. The exhaust system has the important job of removing the toxic exhaust fumes produced by the engine from your car. It also functions to enhance engine performance, minimise noise produced when driving, reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
The Fiat catalytic converter sits between the exhaust manifold and the rear exhaust box.
The Fiat catalytic converter's job is to change the harmful emissions created in the combustion chamber into water vapour and carbon dioxide. This means the harmful toxins produced in the engine are changed to the less harmless emissions before leaving the car and entering the atmosphere.
The Fiat catalytic converter is prone to damage from road debris such as stones, mud, water and can suffer from damage due to overheating. Antifreeze or motor oil getting into the catalytic converter can cause real issues. It is vital to replace the Fiat catalytic converter as soon as possible if this happens as it could ruin the whole exhaust system if left and your car's carbon emissions could be higher than is legal or safe. If your car is consuming much more fuel than usual it's a sign that there is a problem with the catalytic converter. If the Fiat catalytic converter fails it is important to replace it with one that is compatible with the make and model of your car.
Fiat trivia
- Fiat's first car ever was the 4HP, which they rolled out in 1899. It came with a two-cylinder engine, had 4.2 horsepower and managed an impressive 22mph. The car was built in Turin, Italy, where Fiat still has its factory.
- When it was made, the Fiat 500 was one of the smallest cars in the world! It was only 127 inches long and 50 inches wide! Italians have a nickname for the Fiat 500, calling it the 'Topolino', which translates to the little mouse.
- There was an ongoing joke in the UK that Fiat was an acronym for 'Fix it again, Tony'. Fiat found it hilarious and used the slogan themselves in 2014 in their ads.
- Fiat vans have an odd way of being named. They are all named after antique Italian coins! That’s why they have names like Doblo, Ducato, and Fiorino.
- The British School of Motoring uses Fiats as learner vehicles. They moved from the Vauxhall Corsa to Fiats in 2009, and Fiat has now supplied over 14,000 vehicles to the BSM.
