About Air Metering Units
The Jaguar air metering unit works by measuring the air flow in the car's air intake system and sending these measurements to the car's ECU which, based on these measurements, will control the amount of fuel flowing into the engine and the point at which the ignition sparks. The Jaguar air metering unit essentially controls fuel consumption ensuring the engine is running as efficiently as possible.
An engine needs the correct amount of air and fuel flowing through it in order for the fuel to burn in the cylinders and for the engine to ignite or spark at the right time. If the ignition sparks at the wrong time, there will be less power in the engine and it will try to make up for this by using more fuel, which significantly reduces fuel efficiency, which in turn increases your car's CO2 emissions.
The Jaguar air metering unit has an air flow sensor, also called an air flow meter, which works by measuring the air flow and sending these measurements to the ECU. The ECU will then, based on these measurements, control the amount of fuel flowing into the engine and the point at which the ignition sparks.
The Jaguar air metering unit will, over time, wear out or stop working. When this happens, the performance of the engine could be affected and consumption of fuel and engine emissions will be higher. A fault in the Jaguar air metering unit means the engine will not be working properly or efficiently. A faulty Jaguar air metering unit will cause the Check Engine light to show on the dashboard to indicate a malfunction with the Jaguar air metering unit. A broken air metering unit can sometimes prevent a car from idling properly (the ability for a car's engine to run whilst it is not moving) and may cause the engine to splutter and stall. If there is a fault with the Jaguar air metering unit, a replacement Jaguar air metering unit should be purchased.
Jaguar trivia
- PM Margaret Thatcher was determined to keep Jaguar as a British company, and in 1984 she announced that the brand was protected from foreign purchasing. The government retained a 50% share of the company until it became clear that foreign investment was essential as 1990 rolled around.
- The 2014 Superbowl advert for Jaguar featured Brit actors Ben Kingsley and Mark Strong, with a terrified Tom Hiddlestone hanging out of a helicopter as it flew across London. Not many people know that the driver used for this advert was The Stig (Ben Collins).
- To show off just how light the F-Pace SUV was, Jaguar built a loop and the SUV not only tackled it but completed the loop on its first go. The feat earned Jaguar a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
- Before a Jaguar is painted, they are brushed with an ionized emu feather. That's because these feathers are very good at holding an electrostatic charge, and that means they are great at getting rid of any dust that might ruin the finished Jaguar look.
- Steve McQueen was a huge fan of the Jaguar XKSS and even found himself with two driving bans because of his passion for driving fast. He was one of the few people to ever drive an XKSS because only 16 were ever made! McQueen did eventually sell his car, but regretted it immediately and paid more to get it back. The car is now owned by US TV host Jay Leno.
