About Brake Discs

The Land Rover brake discs is a smooth circular steel plate that spins with the road wheels and is used with the brakes to slow the vehicle.

Located behind the wheels the disc is straddled by the brake calipers which contain the brake pad system.

The disc is in a fixed rotation with each wheel, when the brakes are applied the brake pads, on each side of the disc, which are located in the caliper, are forced hydraulically onto the disc which, through friction, slow the rotation of the disc and subsequently the wheels and the vehicle.

Problems with the Land Rover brake discs can include excessive scoring of the smooth surface, due to the failure to renew brake pads, or corrosion. Removal of the disc requires caliper removal.

Charles Spencer "Spen" King CBE, was focused solely on designing a large V8 engine, and then just drew a box around it to show where the engine would sit. It annoyed him for the rest of his life, and he insisted that he'd only put 0.1% of development time on the car shape. He also hated that they would be used for anything other than farming, saying, "...to use them in the school run, or even in towns and cities at all, is completely stupid."
• Land Rover was the two-decade standout winner of the Camel Trophy, a gruelling off-road challenge that sees vehicles compete in Siberia, the Sahara, Australia, and other hostile terrains.
• Land Rover made the 101 Forward Vehicle for the UK military. It was originally built to haul howitzer cannons! The vehicle is so high, in fact, that a step had to be built into the front wheel so that the driver could get into the cab.
• Most cars get an immediate redesign after the prototype is designed. Not with the Range Rover, however! The 1966 design was considered perfect as it was, which never happens in the automotive industry. The Range Rover is considered a work of art, and one of them is even on display in the Louvre.
