About Turbo Pipes

The Land Rover turbo pipe is an important component of the turbocharged engine. The turbo pipe functions to carry the air through the system in a turbo charged engine.

The turbo charger boosts the flow of compressed air and in turn increases the flow of fuel,  into the combustion chamber of the engine, improving the performance of the engine,  which effectively enables the car to go faster.   The turbo charger attaches to the exhaust and the engine and is driven by a turbine powered by gas from the exhaust. The exhaust leaves the engine and enters the housing of the turbine which causes the turbine wheel to rotate.  The power of this rotation turns a shaft connected to a compressor, forcing the compressor to spin. As the compressor rotates it sucks in clean air and forces it through into the combustion chamber, providing extra power to the engine.  The turbo charger increases the engine's  fuel  efficiency and provides significantly more power than the engine alone, while helping to reduce CO2 emissions. It has an important part to play, therefore, in the overall  performance  of  the engine, boosting the performance of  the engine, enabling it to work as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Connected to the air turbine housing and the turbo intercooler, the metal turbo pipe is able to supply the turbo charger with the air needed to power the engine effectively.

Naturally, very high temperatures are produced as a result of this boosting /turbo charging process leading to eventual wear on the turbo pipe. A malfunctioning turbo pipe could allow air to escape and adversely affect engine power. If the turbo pipe is faulty, the warning light will illuminate on the dashboard indicating there's a fault. Seeking advice from a reputable mechanic is always advisable to ensure the right fault has been found before buying replacement parts. When replacing this part, choosing to install a good quality Land Rover turbo pipe will ensure you get a part that fits well works effectively and ultimately lasts longer.

Land Rover trivia

  • The Queen loves Land Rovers and is reported to have owned as many as 30 different models in her life. It was in a Land Rover Defender that her majesty terrified the then Crown Prince Abdullah with her wild driving skills.
  • Land Rovers and James Bond go hand in hand. The 4x4 Land Rover has been in more Bond films than there have been Bond actors! In Spectre, the Defender SVX was customised with 37-inch tyres and more power.
  • According to the film, Judge Dredd (1995), Land Rover will be the last ever car manufacturer in the world. The car company had a heavy presence in the film, and you can still see some film versions of the car driving around the UK.
  • The Range Rover designer hated what he had made. Charles Spencer "Spen" King CBE, was focused solely on designing a large V8 engine, and then just drew a box around it to show where the engine would sit. It annoyed him for the rest of his life, and he insisted that he'd only put 0.1% of development time on the car shape. He also hated that they would be used for anything other than farming, saying, "...to use them in the school run, or even in towns and cities at all, is completely stupid."
  • When the Pope was visiting the UK in 1984, Land Rover designed him a customised Popemobile to use in the country.
