About Cruise Control Units

A Mercedes-Benzcruise control unit is a component that is vital to the operation of a motor vehicle’s cruise control system. Cruise control, which is sometimes also described as speed control, is a system where the velocity of the vehicle is controlled automatically. The Mercedes-Benzcruise control unit does this by assuming control of the throttle (or accelerator) thus preventing the car from being driven at a speed that is greater than that which has been pre-set by the driver.

The Mercedes-Benzcruise control unit transfers the driver’s commands to other components in the cruise control system. This is usually achieved through the cruise control wiring. One of the components with which the Mercedes-Benzcruise control unit communicates is the cruise control actuator, which opens and closes the vehicle’s throttle to achieve and maintain the chosen speed.

Through careful use of a vehicle’s Mercedes-Benzcruise control unit a lengthy motorway drive can be made much less stressful and more comfortable. It can also reduce fuel use and emissions. Most importantly to some drivers, it can also eradicate the risk of a speeding ticket. However, if it is used incorrectly, such as failing to override it when the vehicle is rounding a bend, it can be hazardous.

As with most elements of operating the sophisticated parts of a modern motor vehicle, as long as the Mercedes-Benzcruise control unit is sensibly handled, it can be an invaluable aid to the driver.

Mercedes-Benz trivia

  • Most people think of silver when they think of a Mercedes, but that iconic colour was an accident. Just before a race in 1934, the white-painted W25 was found to be 1kg over the weight limit. The paint was quickly removed, the weight limit reached, and the car won the race.
  • The Popemobile is a Mercedes Benz M-Class SUV. It's not a standard model, however, and has some added features like an inbuilt oxygen system and bulletproof glass.
  • Karl Benz obviously gave his name to the company, but the Mercedes part of the name comes from the daughter of his customer and friend, Emil Jellinek. Her name was (obviously) Mercedes, and it's still surprising that her name remains so attached to the iconic car brand.
  • If you thought self-driving cars were all about Tesla, then it might surprise you to know that Mercedes Benz made an autonomously driving vehicle as early as 1995. It didn't gain popularity, but it became the foundation of the modern driving technology found in every Mercedes Benz.
  • That new car smell is always a delight, but a Mercedes owner gets to choose that smell. Perfume specialist Marc vom Ende created four different car smells for Mercedes Benz, called Sports Mood, Freeside Mood, Downtown Mood, and Nightlife Mood. They all smell a bit leathery.
