About Crankshaft Pulleys
The crankshaft, with the help of the crankshaft pulley, has an important role to play in the distribution of power in a vehicle and is fundamentally responsible for driving the car’s wheels. The engine is the power machine of a car, literally converting energy, in the form of fuel, into movement, and is known as an internal combustion engine. The engine is made up of several components that all work together to enable combustion to occur and in turn the car to move. The Nissan crankshaft pulley has an important part to play in the mechanical linkage which works to harness and distribute the power produced in the engine and transform it into the rotary drive required to make the vehicle move. The Nissan crankshaft pulley enables the drive belt to smoothly spin around, driven by the crankshaft, allowing the drive belt to propel or drive various components in the engine compartment, such as the water pump and air conditioning compressor.
The crankshaft pulley's job is to turn the belt/s that connect to and operate various components in the engine. Situated at the foot of the engine directly in front of the crankshaft, secured to the engine by bolts, the crankshaft pulley is essentially a wheel which has outer grooves that engage with the crankshaft, while linking to other components via a system of belts. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons by the connecting rods. The movement of the pistons makes the crankshaft turn. The connecting rods provide drive from the pistons to the crankshaft, where this power is changed into rotational force and distributed via the pulley and drive belt system to the various components that work together to make the wheels of the car move.
The crankshaft uses the crankshaft pulley system to distribute the power it receives from the pistons, to the components driven by the drive belt. This pulley system enables the distribution of power from the crankshaft to components such as the alternator and power steering pump, while ensuring these components are functioning in sync and kept in alignment with the rotation of the crankshaft. The crankshaft pulley helps to prolong the life of the crankshaft by absorbing some of the vibration, noise and friction produced in the process of internal combustion.
A worn, rusted, dented or damaged crankshaft pulley can affect the vital timing system of the engine and lead to damage to other crucial components. Signs of a problem can be a rattling or knocking noise from the engine and excessive vibration. When this part fails, replacing it with a Nissan crankshaft pulley will guarantee a part that's completely compatible with the make and model of your vehicle.
Nissan trivia
- Nissan used to be called Datson, which was then changed to Datsun because son in Japanese means disadvantage. Eventually, there was a complete rebrand, and the name Nissan was born.
- Nissan built the very first limo and made it specifically for the Emperor of Japan. The car was powered by a growling V8 engine and was just over six metres long.
- Nissan and the French manufacturer Renault have had a long and successful partnership, sharing technologies and manufacturing resources.
- Talk about a long drive, in 1964, the Nissan Cedric drove all the way from Greece to Japan as part of the Tokyo Olympics!
- The Nissan Patrol is a powerhouse of a vehicle, and currently holds the world record for a production car pulling an aircraft. The SUV wasn’t allowed any modifications to tackle this impressive feat, and managed to pull the 170-tonne plane a massive 50 metres.
