About Rev Counters

A motor vehicle’s Peugeotrev counter, or tachometer, is an invaluable component that assists a driver to protect the vehicle’s engine from the damage that can be caused by excessive work.

A Peugeotrev counter is one of the instruments that commonly appears on the dashboard panel and can either be displayed as either an analogue design or in digital form. The Peugeotrev counter works by displaying the optimum time to change gear before over revving. This enhances the peak engine power and torque.

In more modern vehicles the driver receives additional assistance from the Peugeotrev counter. These more sophisticated versions have warning lights to indicate when it is the best time, in terms of the number of revolutions per minute reached, to change gear.

In addition to protecting the engine mechanism, the Peugeotrev counter has three important features. Firstly, because it prevents the driver from working the engine too hard it optimises fuel and oil consumption. Secondly, the reduction in fuel and oil consumption saves money on running costs. Finally, because the engine is running at its optimum performance level, exhaust emissions can be reduced.

As part of the armoury of appliances in a modern motor vehicle, the Peugeotrev counter is one of the most effective in aiding the driver to make the most out of an engine’s performance.

Peugeot trivia

  • Peugeots have been seen on the big and small screen. Most notable, the Peugeot 403 convertible was the car of everyone's famous scruffy detective Colombo. There was also an episode of Absolutely Fabulous where Edina and Patsy drive through France in a 205.
  • Lots of car manufacturers tried building electric vehicles at some point, but Peugeot had more success than others in the 1940s! Fuel restrictions promoted the design, and the car came with four 12-volt batteries that meant a range of 80km on a single charge and a top speed of 32km/h.
  • All models of Peugeot have a number designation with a 0 in the middle. There's a persistent myth that this is because the designers wanted to integrate the starting handle, and chose the central 0 as the ideal way to hide the slot. There's no substance to that myth, but those numbers are an indication of the size and age of the car.
  • Peugeot might not be a name in Formula 1 (they did try a few times, but it never quite worked out), but they have been dominant in other races. In particular, four victories in an incredible 24 hours at Le Mans, and six impressive wins in the Dakar rally, to name just a few.
  • It was Armand Peugeot who turned the company into car manufacturing. He called the company the Société des Automobiles Peugeot (Peugeot Automotive Society) and was the one who approved the famous lion emblem that is still used today.
