About Amps

The Saab amp (or amplifier for its full title), is a key part in a vehicle’s sound system and as the name suggests, it’s job is to amplify low level audio signals so that they can be used by the speakers to generate sound.

There are two types of amplifier and their quality differs considerably. The first type is a basic factory amplifier which is built in to the car audio head unit, which is used to power a small number of speakers. The other is called an outboard amplifier. This Saab amp is separate to the car audio head unit and is capable of providing a much better sound and power more speakers than the head unit amplifier.

Signs that the Saab amp is faulty would result in either no sound or poor sound quality. This could include hissing, cracking or background noise coming through the speakers. This could be a wiring issue, or could be something more specific to the amp. Other damage to the Saab amp can be caused by the amp overheating. This can be rectified by increasing the airflow to the Saab amp. An unblocked fan should always be present.

Saab trivia

  • If you were buying yourself a Saab before 1952, you had the colour choices of green, green, and… green. It wasn't until 1952 that Saab started offering other colours for car buyers.
  • The world's first soft-top hybrid car was the Saab BioPower Hybrid Concept, and it premiered at the 2006 Stockholm Motor Show. The car ran off a combination of pure ethanol and electricity, and so is also the first hybrid to be 100% free of carbon emissions.
  • The Monte Carlo Rally is always a big deal, but the first Saab to win the event was in 1929, with a Swedish-born woman behind the wheel. Greta Molander went to take the Ladies Cup in a Saab in 1952.
  • There was lots of controversy over the Saab 93 in Sweden. Not so much the car itself, but the marketing for the vehicle clearly showed a young couple in bed together, but the woman wasn't wearing a wedding ring. Complaints poured in from shocked Swedes, and Saab hastily added a wedding ring.
  • What does the word 'Saab' even mean? It's actually an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, Swedish Aircraft Company Limited. Saab is much easier to say.
