About Lamp Guards

A Saab lamp guard is mainly used on 4 x 4 vehicles to protect the light from debris and stones, particularly when driving off-road, and forms a protective cage to cover the rear light. Lamp guards are usually made of metal or strong plastic and are produced in different sizes for different vehicles, sometimes in two hinged sections in order to gain access to the lamp and the bulb if necessary.

As well as having a protective function, the Saab lamp guard is often used for cosmetic reasons, which has increased its popularity in the market. However, it’s worth considering that using a Saab lamp guard makes it more difficult to clean your rear light effectively.

Damage to a Saab lamp guard can be caused by impact from another vehicle or from your vehicle hitting another object, which could bend or break the Saab lamp guard. If this occurs, then the Saab lamp guard should be replaced. Other issues may arise from corrosion of metal guards which may need lubricating if it affects the hinges, or replacing for cosmetic reasons.

Saab trivia

  • The Saab 92 was the first production car to put the petrol tank in between the rear wheels. They did this to improve driver safety, and it helped with balance too.
  • Saab was the first car manufacturer to install heated driver's seats. That's because one of the Saab executives suffered from a bad back that was particularly painful on cold mornings.
  • There's a very persistent myth that none of the 16 members of the Saab team had a driving license when they built the very first Saab. It's not quite true, because at least two of the team (including the test driver) are confirmed to have had one.
  • The Saab 900 was built between 1978 and 1993 and is the best selling Saab ever. In that time, it sold a total of 980,817 cars, around half of which were the convertible model. They can still be seen on UK roads very regularly.
  • When it comes to accessories, it's hard to beat the Toppola Camper, which turns a Saab 99 and Saab 900 into a sort of campervan. The Toppola comes with a cooker, double bed, and heater, and is attached to the Saab by removing the rear door.
