About Suspension Coil Springs

A Saab suspension coil spring is a strong metal spring which is located in the front of the vehicle. Its primary function is to absorb the shock transferred to the vehicle when it drives over bumps in the road. The Saab suspension coil spring works by compressing when the vehicle drives over the bump. It’s this compression that diffuses the amount of pressure that is experienced by the vehicle and smooths the ride.

Saab suspension coil springs each have a rating, and it is important that if you replace a Saab suspension coil spring you replace it with one of the same rating. If one Saab suspension coil spring is damaged, both the coil springs in the vehicle should be replaced to ensure that the vehicle is driving with two matching rate springs. It is also likely that if one Saab suspension coil spring is damaged, the other is also damaged.

If a Saab suspension coil spring breaks, you are likely to hear it snap. This can be confirmed by examining the spring. Tyres can jump or wear unevenly if your vehicle has a broken spring.

Saab trivia

  • There was lots of controversy over the Saab 93 in Sweden. Not so much the car itself, but the marketing for the vehicle clearly showed a young couple in bed together, but the woman wasn't wearing a wedding ring. Complaints poured in from shocked Swedes, and Saab hastily added a wedding ring.
  • If you were buying yourself a Saab before 1952, you had the colour choices of green, green, and… green. It wasn't until 1952 that Saab started offering other colours for car buyers.
  • The Monte Carlo Rally is always a big deal, but the first Saab to win the event was in 1929, with a Swedish-born woman behind the wheel. Greta Molander went to take the Ladies Cup in a Saab in 1952.
  • The Saab 92 was the first production car to put the petrol tank in between the rear wheels. They did this to improve driver safety, and it helped with balance too.
  • After the death of James Bond creator and writer Ian Fleming, the writer James Gardner took over writing duties for the super spy. He immediately had Bond driving a Saab 900 Turbo, and Saab even built a replica of the 'Silver Beast' which can still be seen in the Saab Car Museum.
