About Speedometers

A vehicle’s Vauxhall speedometer is a gauge or meter that measures the speed of a motor vehicle. Is does this by measuring the speed at which the wheels are rotating and communicating this to the Vauxhall speedometer head, which then displays this as the vehicle’s speed.

There are two principal means by which the Vauxhall speedometer system communicates the necessary information to the Vauxhall speedometer head. The first of these is by way of a speedometer cable. This is a lengthy, flexible cable that comprises a collection of wires connected to the drive shaft, which turns as the wheels do. The rotation of the drive shaft causes the cable to turn which causes a magnet within a cup inside the speedometer head to turn. This causes currents that produce motion which, in turn, causes the Vauxhall speedometer dial to move and demonstrate the vehicle’s speed.

The second means of transmitting information to the Vauxhall speedometer head is electronically, by means of a Vauxhall speedometer transducer. The Vauxhall speedometer transducer is normally attached to the vehicle’s transmission and is an electronic pulse generator. It sends signals to the car’s computer as to how quickly the wheels are turning and this information is translated by the computer into the speed that is displayed by the Vauxhall speedometer.

In either type of Vauxhall speedometer system there are various components that are susceptible to failure but, fortunately, all of these are easily replaced.

Vauxhall trivia

  • The colour yellow that Vauxhall uses on its cars is named 'Maddox Yellow,' after pensioner Richard Maddox had his Corsa vandalised. Residents of the small village of Arlington where Maddox lived thought the car and the colour were ugly!
  • There’s a Vauxhall for everyone. They currently produce 21 different cars in three different ranges: the passenger car, the commercial car, and four different high-performance VXR models.
  • They might be famous for their cars, but Vauxhall also has the claim to fame of being in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest GPS drawing! The 6080-mile Halloween art made national news!
  • If you're looking for a real bargain, you can't go wrong with the Vauxhall Viva. This small hatchback is the cheapest model that Vauxhall makes!
  • The Vauxhall Vectra was the last car they ever produced in Luton, and it went on to become one of their most poorly reviewed vehicles. Top Gear even put the '95 Vectra on their list of the worst cars of the last 20 years (Clarkson wouldn't even drive it!).
