Honda are to recall almost 900,000 Odyssey minivans in the US.
The exact figure of vehicles to be recalled is 886,815 and will affect the 2005-2010 model years. The faulty part is said to be the fuel pump. This fuel pump has the potential to crack which could result in a potential fire risk. The fire risk is the main reason for the recall.
Honda are looking to identify the exact cause of the failure and reported to the NHSTA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) that it is most likely caused by Acidic chemicals. These chemicals were said to be from fertilizer, car wash or dust control products. Lengthy exposure to any hot environment could also cause a crack in the fuel pump.
The NHSTA released a report on Saturday (15th March 2014) which said that the fuel pump strainer cover is prone to early deterioration causing it to crack. This can in turn lead to a potential fire risk, caused by the above mentioned issues. There have been no reports of any accidents or injuries caused by this problem.
All of these vehicles were built at the Honda plant in Lincoln, Alabama between 23-06-2004 and 04-09-2010. The parts in question were built in the US by the Japanese company Denso.
If you find yourself affected by this problem and your vehicle fits into this category, Honda will be notifying owners on 21st April and the vehicle will be fitted with interim parts until Honda come up with a proper replacement.
As there are so many vehicles affected, Honda are not expected to come up with the replacement parts until the summer. All repair will be free of charge at a Honda dealership.
