Another 170,000 Honda recalls for Takata airbags across Europe and Asia has just been issued.
This now well known Takata airbag recall crisis, has recently seen another death caused by the airbag failure, which now takes the total deaths to 5. The most recent death was reported in Malaysia when a pregnant woman was killed on 27 July driving a 2003 Honda City. It is reported that she had crashed into another vehicle and the airbag inflator ruptured. This is the first death to be reported outside of the United States.
It's believed that the airbag fault is most likely to occur in weather conditions where there is a high level of humidity, which seems to be leading to the inflators rupturing. The faulty part for the Malaysian victim's car was produced at a now closed Takata factory in Georgia. When these inflators rupture, it can send shards of metal into the passenger compartment.
This death prompted Honda to issue a recall for 170,000 vehicles across Europe and Asia. This now means that the total number of vehicles recalled worldwide for this issue now stands at a massive total of over 14.3 million vehicles.
As most of these recalls have taken place in the US, Takata are under some serious investigation in the country. Honda also have critical questions to answer.
