Mazda Demio Overview
The Mazda Demio is classed as a supermini car and is produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturers Mazda. The Demio was first produced in 1996 as a replacement for the Mazda 121 and was replaced by the Mazda 2 in 2002. In Japan the Mazda 2 name wasn’t used, instead they continued using the Demio name and still use it today. These cars are cheap to buy and well equipped. They are not great to drive and have a really odd looking shape, which didn’t help sales. These cars are quite good on fuel and are spacious inside with a good interior design. The handling isn’t too good and rivals of this era are better choices. Does this sound like your experience of the Demio?
Mazda Demio History
The first generation (1996-2002) Mazda Demio was a replacement for the Mazda 121 and was based on the Mazda DW platform. This is a B-segment small car and its tall body design, gives it almost a minivan status. B-segment is a European market classification for second segment. The car's design would be used on such minivans as the Vauxhall Meriva and Renault Modus. This vehicle was marketed as the Mazda 121 in most export countries until the Mazda 2 name was used in 2002. This vehicle had a slight facelift in 1999, mainly to the exterior.
The second generation (2002-07) was marketed as the Mazda 2 worldwide apart from Japan where the Demio name was still used. It was now based on the DY platform.
The third generation (2007-present) is designed on the DE platform and again the Japanese market is the market to use the Demio name for this generation.
