Mini Cooper Overview
The Mini Cooper is the performance car version of the small economy car the Mini. The first versions of this car were produced by BMC (British Motor Corporation) from 1961 up until 2000. In this time the Mini was marketed under many different names including: Austin, Leyland and Rover. Since the reintroduction of the popular Mini Cooper, under the Mini brand name, which is part of BMW, who took over the Rover group in 1994, it managed to retain its iconic look. These cars are great fun to drive, extremely stylish and very fuel efficient. A great buy for a small car and they retain their value.
Mini Cooper History
The Mini Cooper was first brought into the car market in 1959 and was to become one of the most popular cars around. A man called John Cooper, whom this version of the Mini is named after saw the potential of the Mini as a sports car. This man was the owner of the Cooper Car Company and he took his idea to BMC which saw the first Cooper produced in 1961. This car became very successful due to the fact it was inexpensive, cheap to run and fun to drive.
A more powerful version of the Mini Cooper was introduced in 1963, the Cooper S. Both the Cooper and Cooper S were very successful as rally cars, winning many rallies, which increased the demand for these cars by the general public.
When British Leyland took over the Mini in the 70’s, the Cooper versions were not produced as they didn’t want to have to pay John Cooper royalties for the use of his name. This meant that there were no Coopers produced for around 20 years. Under Rover the Cooper version was reintroduced in 1991 and was highly popular. This was made until 2000.
The new version Mini Cooper was introduced in 2001 and this version run until 2006. In 2007 the second generation of these models was introduced, designed on a new platform which made the vehicle more fuel efficient. The first ever diesel version was available on this version. This is the current version in production.

Fuel Economy
The early versions of the Mini Cooper were available in 1.0 and 1.3L petrol engines. The latest versions are available in1.6 petrol, and there is a 2.0 diesel engine available. Due to the small
engines in the earlier versions meant they were very economical and the new diesel version has up to 75mpg (miles per gallon). This vehicle is very good economically on all versions.
Transmission
There are both manual and automatic gearboxes available for the Mini Cooper, with the automatic gearbox only being available on the latest versions. The earlier manual gearboxes were 4-speed with the modern versions 5-speed. Have a look at the
