About Rev Counters

A motor vehicle’s Citroenrev counter, or tachometer, is an invaluable component that assists a driver to protect the vehicle’s engine from the damage that can be caused by excessive work.

A Citroenrev counter is one of the instruments that commonly appears on the dashboard panel and can either be displayed as either an analogue design or in digital form. The Citroenrev counter works by displaying the optimum time to change gear before over revving. This enhances the peak engine power and torque.

In more modern vehicles the driver receives additional assistance from the Citroenrev counter. These more sophisticated versions have warning lights to indicate when it is the best time, in terms of the number of revolutions per minute reached, to change gear.

In addition to protecting the engine mechanism, the Citroenrev counter has three important features. Firstly, because it prevents the driver from working the engine too hard it optimises fuel and oil consumption. Secondly, the reduction in fuel and oil consumption saves money on running costs. Finally, because the engine is running at its optimum performance level, exhaust emissions can be reduced.

As part of the armoury of appliances in a modern motor vehicle, the Citroenrev counter is one of the most effective in aiding the driver to make the most out of an engine’s performance.

Citroen trivia

  • The Citroën 2CV Safari had some crazy extra features. It was a four-wheel-drive vehicle, and Citroën decided that four-wheel drive meant that it would be better to have two engines...one at the front and one at the back. The fuel cap sticks out of the driver's door, and the tank was right under the driver's seat!
  • The 1934 Citroën 7CV was the first mass-produced car to have front-wheel drive, hydraulic brakes, and real suspension! This basic design found its way into subsequent models right up until three decades later in the mid-1950s.
  • French president Charles de Gaulle's life was saved by Citroën not once, but twice. In 1961 a Citroën DS managed to stay intact despite there being a bomb made of plastic explosive, dynamite, oil, and nails. It even managed to drive away from the scene. In 1962, de Gaulle was attacked again, this time with machine guns, but the Citroën again managed to get away from the would-be assassins.
  • Buying Maserati was definitely a mistake for Citroën. The SM model didn't sell well, and that led to financial difficulties that meant the car company was eventually acquired by Peugeot.
  • Thanks to Citroën, the French driver Sebastien Loeb is the single most successful driver in the entire history of the World Rallying Championship. Nine consecutive driver's titles were won by Loeb in the time between 2004 and 2012, driving cars such as the Xsara, the C4, and the DS3.
