About Differentials

The Jaguar differential is essentially a device used to split the engine torque in two and is found on modern vehicles as well as four-wheel drive vehicles. When the differential is used, it allows the outer drive wheel to rotate faster than the inner drive wheel when turning. An increase in the speed of one wheel is balanced with the decrease of speed from the other wheel. 

In most vehicles there is a differential in the front of the vehicle and one in the rear. In a four-wheel drive vehicle, a differential is needed between each set of drive wheels, as well as one in the front and one in the rear. The Jaguar differential joins the pinion to the prop shaft. The pinion is then connected to the main shaft of the gearbox.

Damage to a Jaguar differential is rare and there’s not usually any warning signs of a failure before it occurs. However, if you hear a loud clunk when changing from drive to reverse and back, this could signal an imminent failure of the differential. Another symptom of damage is a grinding noise coming from the driveshaft and lack of power.

• The 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the most gruelling and famous race events in the world, has been won by Jaguar an astonishing seven times. Their first victory was back in 1951.
• Jaguar isn't a big name in F1, but they did have a go. They raced between 2000 and 2004 but didn't perform well enough to justify the costs. They managed a less than stellar ninth place in their final race.
• Steve McQueen was a huge fan of the Jaguar XKSS and even found himself with two driving bans because of his passion for driving fast. He was one of the few people to ever drive an XKSS because only 16 were ever made! McQueen did eventually sell his car, but regretted it immediately and paid more to get it back. The car is now owned by US TV host Jay Leno.
• Jaguar was bought out by Ford in 1990, but they didn't really capitalise on the investment. Eventually, Ford sold Jaguar to the current owners, the Indian company Tata Motors.
