About Air Flow Mass Meters

The Land Rover air flow mass meter is an electronic air flow sensor, also referred to as an air flow mass sensor, which measures air flow; the mass of air which is flowing through the car's engine, and is an important part of the car's Engine Control Unit (ECU).  The Land Rover air flow mass meter has an important part to play in the performance, power and efficiency of the engine.

The Land Rover air flow mass meter is usually found in the plastic housing between the engine and the air filter, connected by the air metering pipe.

The engine needs the correct amount of air and fuel flowing through it in order for the fuel to burn in the cylinders and for the engine to ignite or spark at the right time. If the ignition sparks at the wrong time, there will be less power in the engine and it will try to make up for this by using more fuel, significantly reducing fuel efficiency, which in turn increases the car's CO2 emissions. The Land Rover air flow mass meter works by measuring the air flow and sending these measurements to the ECU which, based on these measurements, controls the amount of fuel flowing into the engine at the point at which the ignition sparks.

The Land Rover air flow mass meter will, over time, wear out or stop working. When this happens, the performance of the engine is likely to be affected and engine emissions will be higher. A fault in the Land Rover air flow mass meter will cause the Check Engine light to show on the dashboard to indicate a malfunction with the Land Rover air flow mass meter. A broken air flow mass meter can sometimes prevent a car from idling properly (the ability for a car's engine to run whilst it is not moving) and may cause the engine to splutter and stall.   • The designer Charles S. King worked with Rolls Royce to design jet engines before going on to build the Range Rover. King would go onto building a car around those jet engines that then held the world land speed record, the first turbine-powered vehicle to do so.
  • Most cars get an immediate redesign after the prototype is designed. Not with the Range Rover, however! The 1966 design was considered perfect as it was, which never happens in the automotive industry. The Range Rover is considered a work of art, and one of them is even on display in the Louvre.
  • Inspired by the Jeeps that had been used in WWII, the first Land Rover's steering wheel was in the middle of the dashboard. This was partly to counter the need to create left and right-hand drive models for different countries.
  • Land Rover was notorious for trying to find ways to avoid paying taxes and extended that to their customers too. They built the Defender 110 so that it could (just about) fit 12 people! Technically, that meant that they could class it as a bus, and owners didn't have to pay standard road tax.
  • Land Rover made the 101 Forward Vehicle for the UK military. It was originally built to haul howitzer cannons! The vehicle is so high, in fact, that a step had to be built into the front wheel so that the driver could get into the cab.
