About Steering Pump Electrics

The Mazdaelectric steering pump forms part of a hydraulic power assisted steering system and is not to be confused with electric power steering, which operates without a belt-driven hydraulic pump. An Mazdaelectric steering pump is found in what is sometimes described as electro-hydraulic or hybrid power steering systems. This type of system uses the same source of hydraulic pressure to provide the steering assistance but the hydraulic fluid is pumped out of the reservoir by an Mazdaelectric steering pump rather than a belt driven by the engine.

The speed of the pump is regulated by an electric controller which has the ability to vary pump pressure and flow. This tailors the system’s contribution to the steering efforts to different driving situations. This means that the Mazdaelectric steering pump can operate at higher speed and thereby provide greater steering assistance when the car is being driven slowly. This is especially helpful in providing assistance when the vehicle is being parked. A further advantage is that the pump can be operated at low speed or shut down completely to provide energy savings when driving in a straight line.

The Mazdaelectric steering pump therefore plays an important role in operating a hydraulic power assisted steering system and is an effective alternative to an engine driven pump.

Mazda trivia

  • Cars can take many years to move from concept to rolling off the production line, but the CX-3 crossover SUV was taken from inception to completion in just 13 months!
  • The attempt by Mazda to make a fast electric car was very successful. The Mazda RX-7 was built in 1979 and could reach an impressive 111.8mph.
  • Mazda is the only Japanese car manufacturer not to be based in Tokyo. Instead, they work out of Hiroshima and were there when a nuclear bomb was dropped. The Mazda factories actually survived the atomic bomb thanks to a small mountain being in the way.
  • Mazda has always been big fans of the rotary engine, and although they originally started using them to help distinguish themselves from other car manufacturers, they are still the only car manufacturer to mass-produce rotary engine-powered vehicles.
  • In 2010, 459 Mazda MX-5s all gathered at the UNESCO Zollverein World Heritage Site in Germany. This is the largest parade of Mazdas in the manufacturer's history.
