About Vacuum Pumps

The Peugeot vacuum pump is a small electric motor-driven pump which works with the car's ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to provide the extra vacuum required for the car's cruise control system to operate.

The vacuum pump is usually located in the left front corner of the engine compartment and is connected to a vacuum line running from the pump to the inside of the car.

When the accelerator pedal is pressed, the Peugeot vacuum pump is activated. The vacuum pump works by creating a vacuum in the actuator, which operates the throttle valve. The throttle valve regulates the flow of air and fuel into the engine and ultimately the speed the car travels at. So the cruise control on the car takes charge of this process and, with the vacuum produced by the vacuum pump, manages the flow of air into the engine and in turn the speed of the car. Once the car has reached the desired pre-set speed, the cruise control system will maintain this constant speed and the Peugeot vacuum pump shuts off.

The Peugeot vacuum pump has several components that can fail over time, including the electric motor. If this part malfunctions it is imperative that you replace it with a Peugeot vacuum pump that will be compatible with the make and model of your car.

Peugeot trivia

  • Peugeots, especially the 504, are incredibly popular in Africa and have been affectionately called Africa's workhorse. The 504 is a model that seems particularly well-suited to the rough terrains of Kenya and Ghana.
  • In 1913, one of Peugeot's motorsports team, Jules Goux, not only won the Indianapolis 500 but also broke the World Speed Record. He was the first European to win the Indy 500, and the 7.6-litre car was dubbed the fastest vehicle of the time.
  • You know the name Ettore Bugatti and the brand that bears his name, but did you know that Bugatti also designed the four-cylinder engine in 1912 for the Peugeot Bébé? You can't miss that unmistakable Bugatti look once you know that fact, and the car quickly became France's best selling car.
  • Lots of car manufacturers tried building electric vehicles at some point, but Peugeot had more success than others in the 1940s! Fuel restrictions promoted the design, and the car came with four 12-volt batteries that meant a range of 80km on a single charge and a top speed of 32km/h.
  • Peugeot has won the European Car of the Year an incredible five times. The earliest win was in 1969, and the latest was as recently as 2017 (the Peugeot 3008).
