About Wheel Bearings

A Peugeot wheel bearing is an essential component of the car’s hub assembly and is responsible for the smooth rotation of the wheel on its axle.

Most modern cars use sealed bearings consisting of an inner, central and outer race housing 2 sets of bearings (inner and outer). They are lubricated with high temperature grease and sealed to prevent the ingress of moisture and debris.

The sealed bearing unit is pressed into the centre of the hub assembly.

There are generally 2 types of wheel bearing, roller for driven wheels and race or tapered for non-driven wheels.

Due to the high levels of friction and movement the wheel bearing is prone to wear. This is especially likely when water or debris enters the unit. While sealed bearings are maintenance free older style bearings should be regularly greased to prolong life.

Worn bearings should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent additional wear to other components of the vehicle including tyres, hub assembly and suspension.

Peugeot trivia

  • The first diesel engine prototype from Peugeot was built in the 1930s, but they didn't start releasing models commercially until 1959 (the 403).
  • It was also in 1913 (some might say because of the Indy 500 win) that Peugeot were responsible for the production of half of all of the cars in France. That quickly made them one of the world's biggest names in the automotive industry.
  • Peugeot has won the European Car of the Year an incredible five times. The earliest win was in 1969, and the latest was as recently as 2017 (the Peugeot 3008).
  • Peugeot might not be a name in Formula 1 (they did try a few times, but it never quite worked out), but they have been dominant in other races. In particular, four victories in an incredible 24 hours at Le Mans, and six impressive wins in the Dakar rally, to name just a few.
  • It's a dubious claim to fame, but the first recorded stolen car was a Peugeot! The car, belonging to Baron de Zuylen, was nicked by his mechanic in 1896, but the thief was caught, and the car returned to its rightful owner.
