About Coil Packs
The Renault coil pack is an essential part of the ignition of a vehicle. It consists of several coils in one fitting. Each coils role is to transfer the power from the vehicles 12volt battery in to a much higher voltage of thousands of volts to create the spark in spark plugs. They are then told when to fire by an on-board computer. These coils have some form of resistor in them, which limits the amount of power transmitted to the coils from the 12volt battery. This resistor can be an internal or external resistor or consist of a resistor wire. One coil pack is used for either one or two engine cylinders.
The downside of a Renault coil pack is that if one of the individual coils in the pack goes, the whole pack needs to be replaced. Just one damaged coil can cause its adjoined engine cylinder to misfire. This may show on the dashboard as a ‘check engine’ light. Damage can be caused by worn spark plugs, which make the Renault coil pack work harder to compensate, or faulty wiring or components. Renault coil packs can also simply wear out through repeated use.
Renault trivia
- The Renault 8 was the first production car to come with a four-wheel disc brake system, and in 1980 the company filed a patent for a ‘braking distribution device for total adherence’.
- Nicole? Papa? The Renault advert that ran up until 1991 made actress Estelle Skronik more recognisable than PM John Major and TV host Chris Evans, and the advert finale was the single most-watched advert of all time (23 million Brits tuned in to watch it).
- The Renault RS01 was dubbed ‘the yellow steam engine’ after it became the world’s first-ever turbocharged F1 car. It wasn’t a reliable car, but it was certainly quick!
- Back in ‘96, Renault got a previously unheard of 4-star rating in the EuroNCAP crash test, designed to maximise passenger safety. At the time, this was the highest award that had ever been granted by the board.
- The fastest Renault ever made is the 1978 Alpine A443. It raced at Le Mans, and even with a less than intimidating 2.1ltr V6 engine it still managed an incredible 236mph.
