About Coil Springs

A Saab coil spring is a heavy duty metal spring that sits on the lower wishbone and is a key part of a vehicle’s suspension system. It works as a shock absorber and compresses and expands to absorb the bumps and holes in the road as the vehicle is driven.

All Saab coil springs are given a rating and if they need to be replaced, must be replaced with a spring of the same rating. This spring also has to have the same rating as the other spring. Because of this, it is highly recommended that you replace both Saab springs at the same time.

There are many reasons why a Saab coil spring can fail. Harsh weather has taken a huge toll, with salt and rust being a big problem. This isn’t usually a problem in newer springs as they have a plastic coating, however as this wears down over time it exposes the spring to the elements.

To prevent early damage to springs it is recommended that drivers should regularly clean underneath the vehicle with a pressure washer. This may prolong the life of the spring and other parts.

Saab trivia

  • The Monte Carlo Rally is always a big deal, but the first Saab to win the event was in 1929, with a Swedish-born woman behind the wheel. Greta Molander went to take the Ladies Cup in a Saab in 1952.
  • The Saab 900 was built between 1978 and 1993 and is the best selling Saab ever. In that time, it sold a total of 980,817 cars, around half of which were the convertible model. They can still be seen on UK roads very regularly.
  • Saab was the first car manufacturer to install heated driver's seats. That's because one of the Saab executives suffered from a bad back that was particularly painful on cold mornings.
  • The Saab car badge is a very stylized version of the wing from an aeroplane.
  • When it comes to accessories, it's hard to beat the Toppola Camper, which turns a Saab 99 and Saab 900 into a sort of campervan. The Toppola comes with a cooker, double bed, and heater, and is attached to the Saab by removing the rear door.
