About CV Gaiter Outers
A Saab outer CV gaiter is a strong rubber protective cover which fits snugly over the CV joint in order to protect it from debris and damage when the vehicle is in motion. It contains lubricant which enables the parts of the CV joint to move smoothly without wear.
Failure in a Saab outer CV gaiter will most likely be caused by damage to the rubber material which can mean that the essential lubricant is lost and contaminants can enter the confines of the gaiter which causes risk of damage to the inner CV joint. The CV joint is essential in driving the vehicle forward as it transfers torque from the transmission to the wheels at a constant speed, and if damaged can cause the vehicle to cease operation.
The most common way to diagnose a damaged Saab outer CV gaiter is by inspection by a mechanic who will be able to see any signs of cracking, wear or lubricant leaking from the gaiter. However, in the event of a damaged Saab outer CV gaiter causing damage to the CV joint you will hear a knocking noise coming from the vehicle, which becomes louder on acceleration.
Saab trivia
- Saab was the first car manufacturer to install heated driver's seats. That's because one of the Saab executives suffered from a bad back that was particularly painful on cold mornings.
- There's a very persistent myth that none of the 16 members of the Saab team had a driving license when they built the very first Saab. It's not quite true, because at least two of the team (including the test driver) are confirmed to have had one.
- The Saab 900 was built between 1978 and 1993 and is the best selling Saab ever. In that time, it sold a total of 980,817 cars, around half of which were the convertible model. They can still be seen on UK roads very regularly.
- The Saab 92 was the first production car to put the petrol tank in between the rear wheels. They did this to improve driver safety, and it helped with balance too.
- When it comes to accessories, it's hard to beat the Toppola Camper, which turns a Saab 99 and Saab 900 into a sort of campervan. The Toppola comes with a cooker, double bed, and heater, and is attached to the Saab by removing the rear door.
