About Crankshaft Pulleys
The crankshaft, with the help of the crankshaft pulley, has an important role to play in the distribution of power in a vehicle and is fundamentally responsible for driving the car’s wheels. The engine is the power machine of a car, literally converting energy, in the form of fuel, into movement, and is known as an internal combustion engine. The engine is made up of several components that all work together to enable combustion to occur and in turn the car to move. The Peugeot crankshaft pulley has an important part to play in the mechanical linkage which works to harness and distribute the power produced in the engine and transform it into the rotary drive required to make the vehicle move. The Peugeot crankshaft pulley enables the drive belt to smoothly spin around, driven by the crankshaft, allowing the drive belt to propel or drive various components in the engine compartment, such as the water pump and air conditioning compressor.
The crankshaft pulley's job is to turn the belt/s that connect to and operate various components in the engine. Situated at the foot of the engine directly in front of the crankshaft, secured to the engine by bolts, the crankshaft pulley is essentially a wheel which has outer grooves that engage with the crankshaft, while linking to other components via a system of belts. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons by the connecting rods. The movement of the pistons makes the crankshaft turn. The connecting rods provide drive from the pistons to the crankshaft, where this power is changed into rotational force and distributed via the pulley and drive belt system to the various components that work together to make the wheels of the car move.
The crankshaft uses the crankshaft pulley system to distribute the power it receives from the pistons, to the components driven by the drive belt. This pulley system enables the distribution of power from the crankshaft to components such as the alternator and power steering pump, while ensuring these components are functioning in sync and kept in alignment with the rotation of the crankshaft. The crankshaft pulley helps to prolong the life of the crankshaft by absorbing some of the vibration, noise and friction produced in the process of internal combustion.
A worn, rusted, dented or damaged crankshaft pulley can affect the vital timing system of the engine and lead to damage to other crucial components. Signs of a problem can be a rattling or knocking noise from the engine and excessive vibration. When this part fails, replacing it with a Peugeot crankshaft pulley will guarantee a part that's completely compatible with the make and model of your vehicle.
Peugeot trivia
- Peugeot has won the European Car of the Year an incredible five times. The earliest win was in 1969, and the latest was as recently as 2017 (the Peugeot 3008).
- In 1913, one of Peugeot's motorsports team, Jules Goux, not only won the Indianapolis 500 but also broke the World Speed Record. He was the first European to win the Indy 500, and the 7.6-litre car was dubbed the fastest vehicle of the time.
- It was also in 1913 (some might say because of the Indy 500 win) that Peugeot were responsible for the production of half of all of the cars in France. That quickly made them one of the world's biggest names in the automotive industry.
- You know the name Ettore Bugatti and the brand that bears his name, but did you know that Bugatti also designed the four-cylinder engine in 1912 for the Peugeot Bébé? You can't miss that unmistakable Bugatti look once you know that fact, and the car quickly became France's best selling car.
- All models of Peugeot have a number designation with a 0 in the middle. There's a persistent myth that this is because the designers wanted to integrate the starting handle, and chose the central 0 as the ideal way to hide the slot. There's no substance to that myth, but those numbers are an indication of the size and age of the car.
