About Central Locking Motors
The Rover central locking motor is a 2 wire electrical motor that attaches to the power supply on the vehicle and uses electrical power to operate the central locking to lock or unlock the vehicle. There is one Rover central locking motor per door on the vehicle, and another to operate the boot. Often when the central locking is used you will hear the motor whirr in to action. This noise will also be accompanied by a clunking noise when locking and unlocking the door.
Failures of the Rover central locking motor could be caused by dirty brushes inside the motor. It is possible to clean these and see if this solves the problem. However, if the Rover central locking motor is still out of action, it’s possible that one of the components of the motor has failed. A common cause of motor failure is the microswitch. If the motor fails, you will most likely require a replacement.
Failure to replace the damaged motor will mean that you are unable to lock or unlock its corresponding door or boot. This can obviously cause security issues, so it is recommended to get the motor replaced as soon as possible.

- British Aerospace ended up buying the Rover brand in 1988. But they sold it off in 1994 to BMW, who formed MG Rover.
- Corporate shenanigans changed the company a lot by the 70s, and Rover was owned by British Leyland.
- Rover worked with the BRM F1 team to make the aptly named Rover-BRM. It took a lap of honour in the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1963 as the first gas-driven prototype sports car.
- During the 1960s, Rover was forced to cancel several promising car projects. That's because Rover became a corporate partner with Jaguar, and some of the projects they were working on were too similar! The Rover P8 was just one of the victims of this partnership and a prototype was never built.
- The Rover name has had a turbulent history, but they achieved some amazing things. In March 1950, they unveiled the prototype of the Rover JET1. It was the first car to ever run off a gas turbine engine. It could reach a speed of 88mph! However, it did manage 150mph during speed tests. The JET1 is now on display at the London Science Museum.
